Gunfight erupts in Bandarban tourists rescue drive

A fierce gunfight is going on between unidentified miscreants and the members of a joint force that conducts a drive in the hilly areas of Ruma upazila on Sunday to rescue two kidnapped tourists and their guide.

However, locals claimed a member of village police was killed and two others were injured in the shootout though any official source could not be reached for the confirmation.

When contacted, Ruma zone Bangladesh Army Staff Lieutenant Rafe said the firing between both sides was on as of filing this report at 3:20pm starting from noon and they recalled additional troops from the Sadar zone.

Soldiers have been sent to the spot so far six times after 12pm, Rafe continued.

On October 3, Jakir Munna, 35, and Abdullah Al-Zubayer, 28, both residents of Dhaka’s Mirpur, and their guide Mangsai Mro went missing in the Raikkhong Pukur Para in Ruma upazila of the hill district.

Later, Myanmar's armed separatist rebel group Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) demanded Tk50 lakh ransom for the two tourists and their guide.
