A seven-year-old boy drowned in a 30-feet well on Thursday afternoon in the capital’s Ashulia area. His body was pulled out of the well after nearly four hours of rescue efforts by the fire service of Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ), witnesses told the Dhaka Tribune.
The child, Yeasin, lived with his family in a rented flat at Dakkhin Bhadail area in Ashulia, said his father Jashim Uddin.
He said Yeasin was playing near the well when he fell into it around 2:30pm. His family informed the DEPZ fire service, who spent four hours to bring Yeasin out. When they brought the body up around 6:15pm, he was dead.
“The water in the well had to be pumped out for nearly an hour to rescue the child. That is why it took so long,” said Senior Station Officer Abdul Hamid of the DEPZ fire service.
Yeasin’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, said Ashulia police station OC Mohsin Qadir.
“Also, appropriate action will be taken against Zahir Uddin, owner of the well, for keeping the well uncovered and not putting safety measures in place,” he added.
