MP Liton sent to jail

A Gaibandha court has rejected the bail petition filed by Awami League MP Manjurul Islam Liton and sent him to jail in a case filed for shooting a child in the leg.

Gaibandha Chief Judicial Magistrate Moinul Hassan Yusuf passed the order on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, defence lawyer filed a bail petition with the court.

On the other hand, the supporters of MP Liton locked into a clash with the police when the law enforcers hindered their procession leading towards the court around 11am.

Police fired several rounds of tear shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

The lawmaker from Gaibandha 1 constituency was taken to the district's police super office around 6am from Dhaka.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the Awami League lawmaker from his relative’s house in Uttara around 10pm Wednesday.

Liton’s arrest came hours after the Supreme Court issued a stay order on a High Court ruling that rejected an anticipatory bail petition by Liton and ordered him to surrender before the trial court by October 18.

On October 2, eight-year-old Sourav, son of Sazu Miah of Gopalcharan village, was injured with stray bullets allegedly fired by Liton at the village. The father filed a case against Liton the following day and the legislator went into hiding after that.
