Bangladeshi death toll now 79

The government has now updated the Mina stampede death toll of Bangladeshi Hajj pilgrims to 79, while 70 more are said to remain missing.

“As per the updated report received from the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah, 79 bodies of Bangladeshi pilgrims, who had lost their lives in the Mina incident on September 24, 2015, have so far been found,” said Religious Affairs Secretary Chowdhury Md Babul Hassan.

“Some 70 Bangladeshi devotees are still missing,” he told journalists at his secretariat office yesterday.

“The injured hajis are undergoing treatment at Al Noor Hospital, King Abdullah Hospital and Mina Hospital.”

As of Friday, a new tally by Associated Press shows that the Mina stampede claimed the lives of at least 1,453 pilgrims, making it the deadliest event to ever strike the annual pilgrimage.
