It may be a little too soon to tell if Black Mass will be up for any nominations. But one thing is for sure, Johnny Depp is back. After the abysmal run of box office failures for Depp, Black Mass brings us back to his brilliance. This is what he was meant for. Apart from Depp’s performance, the film itself was done quite well. Could we consider it a classic? Not really. However, it’s definitely worth the praise and the positive attention it has received.
Another splendid surprise has been the supporting role by Australian actor, Joel Edgerton. He carried his own weight, not shying away from Depp’s own stardom. Many have already tipped him to be nominated for an Academy Award for his role of FBI agent John Connolly. Whether he wins or not, well, time will only tell. Director, Scott Cooper, did a solid job of bringing to life the true story of America’s most wanted criminal Whitey Bulger (Depp). It has to be said, there were hints of Scorsese in the film. The comparisons were unavoidable. This is, after all, a look into the FBI’s involvement into the local Bostonian, violent gangsters.
Black Mass, for those in the dark, is a portrayal of the true story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, palyed by Johnny Depp. The South Boston infamous criminal became an FBI informant to take down a well-known mafia family that was invading his turf. After the first five minutes of screen time, you will gradually forget the vampire-like makeup Depp has in the film. He’s so good in this role, you’ll end up forgetting it’s Depp, and start to believe he is actually the monstrous Southie everyone feared. It is, by far, the most menacing role Depp has taken on and performed to perfection. There are some really uncomfortable scenes involving his frightening presence. So much so, you might hear your stomach churning.
In all honesty, the first hour of the film will have a subtle effect on your viewing experience. You’ll start to wonder what all the hype is about. But with the wonderful inclusion of Benedict Cumberbatch (Billy Bulger, Whitey’s brother and state senator) and Dakota Johnson (Lindsey Cyr), will keep you intrigued throughout. After the 60 minute mark, the intensity of the film will make you shake, rattle and roll until the end. This is a film that is worth watching more than once, just so you can completely embrace the return of Johnny Depp at his best.
