Five people including four members of a family have been killed and four others injured as a passenger bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway at Patiya upazila in Chittagong.
The family members including Kanchan Sen, 28, his wife Anamika Sen, 24, their son Kakon Sen, 3, his elder brother Anjan Sen, 32, Anjan’s wife Rupna Sen, 25, their two sons Apon Sen, 07, and Anik Sen, 05, Kanchan’s cousin Milton Sen, 24, started for Banshkhali with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from their village at Kelishahar in Patiya upazila, police said.
When their auto-rickshaw reached at Manansa Chowmuhani area at Patiya upazila it collided head-on with a passenger bus at around 12.30pm on Friday.
Four members of the family along with the driver of CNG-run auto-rickshaw were killed in the accident and four others of the family critically injured.
Of the deceased, Milton and Kakon were killed on the spot and Rupna, Anik and the driver of auto-rickshaw Saiful Islam, 25, succumbed to their injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Shafiqul Azam, in-charge of Patiya Highway police outpost and Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam, in-charge of CMCH police camp.
Critically injured Kanchan, Anamika, Anjan and Apon were admitted to CMCH, they said.
Contacted, Shafiqul Azam, in-charge of Patiya Highway police outpost, said the passenger bus was going to Cox’s Bazar while the CNG-run auto-rickshaw was heading to Chittagong city.
Contacted, Kefayat Ullah, officer-in-charge of Patiya police station, said police seized the bus but the driver managed to flee the scene.
No case was filed in this connection at the time of filing of this report at 6:38pm.
