Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing

A Bangladeshi has been killed and another suffered bullet wounds after BSF personnel crossed the border illegally and opened fire on the people in the district's Aditmari upazila.

The deceased is Abdur Rahim, 30. Injured Sultan Mia, 34, is undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).

The BSF jawans also beat up three people, included a woman, for protesting the illegal entry.

The injured—Rabeya Begum, Saju and Suman – are also being treated in the same hospital.

Quoting locals, Lalmonirhat-15 BGB battalion Mogholhat Company Commander Subedar Shamsul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune: “A BSF team entered inside Bangladesh illegally through the Durgapur border at 9:30pm Friday.

“Following their illegal entry, the locals chased them. At one stage, the BSF men opened fire on the locals, leaving two people injured.”

Later, injured Rahim succumbed to his injuries at the RMCH on Friday morning.

They also snatched four cows from the locals and went back, said the BGB official.

Lalmonirhat-15 BGB battalion Commander Lt Col Ahmed Bazlur Rahman Hayati said: “We have lodged strong protest with the Indian authorities over the incident. A flag meeting is scheduled to be held around 4pm at Durgapur border.”
