Medical applicants threaten tougher steps from tomorrow

Protesting medical college applicants yesterday threatened that they would opt for sterner steps from tomorrow if the authorities concerned did not make any move within today to arrange a fresh admission test and cancel the results published earlier.

They said they would hold a teacher-student solidarity rally in front of the National Museum in the capital’s Shahbagh at 3pm today to press home their demands.

Tanjira Bishwas, one of the coordinators of the ongoing protests, made the announcements during a demonstration at the central Shaheed Minar around midday.

She criticised the health minister, who recently said no  unjustified demand of the demonstrators would be entertained.

The minister also said the applicants were creating chaos by demonstrating on road.

“We have all the evidence that show how entrance examination question papers were leaked. We are ready to reveal those if anyone wants to see. We are actually demonstrating against a fake admission test,” Tanjira told the crowd.

She strongly urged the government to satisfy the demands of the protesters by today.

After the demonstration, the students marched through different streets on the Dhaka University campus.

Meanwhile, members of Progotishil Chhatra Jote, a platform of seven left-leaning student organisations, also brought out a procession on the university campus to express solidarity with the protesting students.

On Wednesday, at least 12 protesters were injured in Karwan Bazar as police charged truncheons on them while they were heading towards the Directorate General of Health Services to submit a memorandum seeking a fresh admission test.

Students asserted that their demonstration was non-violent in nature and that the attack on police by them was deliberate and unreasonable.

The medical admission test was held on September 18 and protests ensued amid widespread question leak allegations.
