Yunus inaugurates Jobra Museum and Archives

Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus inaugurated the Jobra Museum and Archives last Saturday at the village of Jobra where Grameen Bank was founded in 1976, said a press release from the Yunus Centre.

Most of the former staff from its first branch, as well as Professor HI Latifee who had coordinated all of Yunus’ activities in the early years, attended the inauguration.

Distinguished guests from the port city of Chittagong, Chittagong University, acting managing director of Grameen Bank ASM Mohiuddin, and senior executives also attended the event.

Muhammad Yunus narrated a story of how the bank was founded in Jobra, with the collaboration between the village inhabitants and an academic from Chittagong University.

He recalled the role played by the village youth and elders in his initiative to create the Nabajug Tebhaga Khamar in 1974 in order to produce irrigated crops in the village and add a third crop in their crop cycle.

Professor Sekander Khan, former chairman of economics at Chittagong University, spoke about the role played by students of various departments at the university to make the project a success.
