The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (CIID) yesterday evening seized 16 petty cartons of foreign currencies, including Indian rupees, from a container at Chittagong port’s Yard Number 1 area.
Till filing this report, CIID authorities said they would continue to search the container, arrived from Dubai, and the number of cartons with foreign currencies would likely increase.
None have been arrested in this connection, and the amount could not be confirmed by authorities at the time this report was dispatched, said the CIID sources.
CIID Additional Deputy Commissioner Hossain Ahmed said the officials concerned found a personal luggage in the container when they conducted a scan search around 6:30pm.
“I heard from the on-duty officials over phone that a carton of US dollars was seized while the drive was going on,” he said while talking with Dhaka Tribune over mobile phone.
“We found four master cartons in the container, and 16 petty cartons full of Indian rupees were also found,” said CIID Assistant Director Syed Mukaddesh Hossain, adding that the amount had not yet been counted and the number of such cartons would increase.
Chittagong Port Director (Admin) Zafar Alam said, “We heard about the CIID’s recovery, for which sufficient port security personnel were deployed in the area and the container was cordoned off by them.”
