Farabi on fresh remand in Avijit murder case

Outlawed militant group Hizb ut-Tahrir leader Shafiur Rahman Farabi, arrested for instigating murder of secular bloggers, was put on a fresh two-day remand in connection with Avijit Roy murder case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Hossain Wednesday granted his remand, second time in the case, after the police produced Farabi before the court.

Former Chittagong University student Farabi was arrested on March 2 and put on a 10-day remand the following day in Avijit murder case.

The radical Islamist leader was arrested for instigating the murder of US citizen Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna through his posts on Facebook and blogs.

The investigators sought his fresh remand as Shahjalal University student Mannan Yahya alias Mannan Rahi alias Hira alias Abdul Munim in his confessional statement said that he along with Farabi had planned the murder of secular blogger Ananta Bijoy Das long before the killing of Avijit on February 26.

Infamous for making wrong explanation of Islam and criticising other religions, Farabi is facing several other cases including the one for defaming the prime minister through his Facebook posts.

After his arrest, Farabi denied his involvement in Avijit murder, but mentioned that the science writer had got what he deserved for mocking religion. Elite force RAB claimed that they had proof of Farabi’s involvement with the killing. But the Detective Branch of police, however, has not got such clue.

In 2013, Farabi served six months in jail in another case lodged against him for threatening an imam with death for administering the funeral rites of blogger-architect Ahmed Rajeeb Haider, who was killed on February 15 the same year by the militants of Ansarullah Bangla Team.
