In an attempt to regulate the Eid traffic rush, the government has decided to bar trucks from entering Dhaka city before 10pm and recommended that work on Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover stay suspended for the time being.
The restrictions will stay in place between September 20 and Eid day, according to decisions made by a special government taskforce yesterday.
“We have made 20 decisions to make travelling during the Eid holidays hassle-free for people,” Kaikobad Hossain, chairman of the taskforce, told the Dhaka Tribune following the body’s first meeting at the city’s Nagar Bhaban.
The 20-point decision has been sent to all the relevant departments and transport organisations as well as law enforcement agencies.
Kaikobad, who is also the executive director of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, said the Road Transport and Highways Division formed the special taskforce to ease holiday commuting and ensure road safety during Eid.
According to the minutes of the meeting, the taskforce recommended that all entry and exit roads of the capital be repaired ahead of Eid.
The city corporations and metropolitan traffic police were asked to pay special attention in controlling the movement of the Gabtoli-bound cattle-laden trucks that cause jams. The taskforce further requested all departments concerned to assist the police in solving the capital’s traffic congestion crisis.
All construction materials, including those of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover, must not obstruct traffic movement, the meeting also decided.
The taskforce also asked the Dhaka north and south city corporations to take necessary steps to clean the waste left behind from sacrificed cattle and to distribute bleaching powder among the city dwellers.
