International Literacy Day observed

International Literacy Day-2015, was observed across the country yesterday to emphasize the importance on ‘Literacy and Sustainable Societies’.

In Faridpur

Our correspondent reported that a colorful procession participated by students, teachers, officials and NGO- men was brought out in the morning which paraded the main streets of the town.

The procession was followed by a discussion on “Literacy and sustainable societies” was held in the conference room of the deputy commissioner.

ADC Md Abdur Rashid chaired the meeting while it was addressed among others by NGO personnel Azharul Islam, Jahangir Alom, Fazlul Hadi Sabbir, Nazma Begum, District Education Officer Parimol Chandra Mondol and Kaijuri Union chairman Khondoker Iftekhar Mohammad Iku.

Assistant Director of Non-Formal Education, Faridpur Nilufar Chowdhury presented the key note paper where she stressed the need for more commitment and coordination among the government agencies and NGOs for make the programme of literacy in the country.

Speakers addressing the seminar observed that since the inception of the programme in this country for eradicating illiteracy huge money were spent so far without any tangible result. This important carefully and sincerely learning from the mistakes of the past, the speaker hoped.

The speaker also urged upon all concerned to make it a social programme motivating the people at large. ADC Abdur Rashid stressed on strong to emphasize the importance of literacy to individuals, society and communities. political commitment for making this programme success that will help our overall development and progress.

He said that for sustainable societies the society must be made free from the curse of illiteracy, he added.

In Narayanganj

Marking the day, Narayanganj district administration and Bureau of Non-formal education jointly organised a discussion at Chasahra Shaheed Zia hall premises, reports our correspondent.

The speakers at the discussion stressed the need for intensifying mass awareness among people about the literacy campaign to make the nation free from the curse of illiteracy.

The present government has taken up pragmatic measures to turn the huge population into human resources by eradicating illiteracy, they added.

Presided over by Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman Mia, the discussion was addressed by ADC (General) Gausul Azam, ADC (Rev) Siddiqur Rahman, ADC (Education) Shahin Ara Begum, Assistant Director Bureau of Non-formal education Narayanganj Md. Khaled and Vice-President of Narayanganj Sadar upzila Fatema Monir.

Earlier, a colourful procession was brought out from Shaheed Zia Hall participated by students, teachers of different educational institutions, government officials and NGO’s.

The participants carried banners, festoons and placards to make the literacy day programme a success.

In Nilphamari

Our correspondent said that a big procession was brought out from the Collectorate building in the morning to mark the occasion.

Students of different educational institutions, government officials, NGO workers and people of various professions took part. Processionists carried colourful festoons and placards with them and paraded different streets in the town

Rupayan, a local NGO, organised a discussion at the Sadar upazila auditorium. Rupayan president Md Javed Ali presided the discussion while Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner (DC) Khondokar Moklesur Rahman addressed as chief guest. Raja Shahidul Islam read out a key-note paper.

In Dinajpur

A procession led by Deputy Comissioner AM Saiful Hasan paraded different streets in the district town, reports our correspondent.

Processionists carried banners, festoons and placards with them.

A discussion was arranged at Dinajpur Zilla School auditorium. Md Moazzem Hossain, director of Gram Bikash Kendra, a local NGO presided while ADC  Dilip Kumar Banik was present as the main discussant.
