Pay scale report likely to be placed in cabinet today

A report on the eighth pay scale for public servants along with the recommendations made by a secretary-level committee will be placed before the cabinet meeting today, sources have said.

The three-page summary of the new pay scale hike includes provisions of time scale and selection grade for the 2.1 million public servants.

Officials at the implementation wing of the Finance Ministry said that officers and non-officers were at loggerheads over choosing 5% compound increment or selection grade provisions.

“It is clear that the cabinet meeting will give directives to the Finance Division to form several committees to resolve those differences before implementation of the new pay scale. As a result, the government will need more time to implement the new pay scale” an official, seeking anonymity, said.

The summary of the new pay scale has been prepared by Finance Secretary Mahbub Ahmed.

The secretary-level committee submitted its updated report to the finance minister on May 13.

The Pay Commission, headed by former Bangladesh Bank governor Mohammed Farashuddin, made its recommendations on December 21 last year.

It had proposed 16 grades, although the secretary-level committee revised it to 20 grades. The highly anticipated pay commission report and secretary-level report proposed more than doubled salaries for the public servants with the proposed lowest to highest basic salary grades ranging between Tk8,250 and Tk75,000.
