Flood situation marked sharp deterioration as the major rivers were flowing above danger marks yesterday at several points in Jamalpur, Moulvibazar, Gaibandha, Sunamganj,Bogra, Tangail, Khulna, Kurigram and Rangpur districts marooning over thousands of people.
In Jamalpur
Our correspondent said that the overall flood situation in the district deteriorated with continuous rising of water level in the river Jamuna.
Water Development Board office sources said during the last 24 hours Jamuna rose 16 cm and was flowing 19 cm over the danger level at Bahadurabad Ghat point.
Executive engineer of Water Development Board Naba Kumar Chowdhury said flood water may rise further due to the onrush of water from upper stream.
According to sources, due to onrush of waters from the upstream and continuous rainfall, the water level of the Jamuna rivers rose. As a result, the erosion by the river has taken serious turn at Belgachha in Islampur and Basuria area in Sarishabari upazila.
In Bogra
Overall flood situation in the district has furthered worsened embankment in severla points were wiped out due to strong current of the Jamuna River, said our correspondent.
Nearly 50 villages under Sariakandi upazila went under water as embankment at Chandanbaisha was collapsed. Over one lakh people of the villages have been marooned.
After collapsing the embankment, the marooned people are being shifted to the safer places. Many of them took shelter to roads and other high land areas with their belongings.
In Tangail
According to reports of our correspondent, flood situation in the district has deteriorated due to rise of water levels of the Jamuna and Dhaleswari rivers.

In Gaibandha
Our correspondent reported that flood situation in chars and Brahmaputra river basin area of four upazilas in the district deteriorated further as Brahmaputra marked rise.
The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board said water level of the river Brahmaputra increased by 10 cm during the period due to onrush of hilly waters from the upstream and incessant rainfall and was flowing 24 cm above the danger level at Fulchharighat point.
In Rangpur
Due to heavy rain and flood standing crops on 82,406 hectares of land worth Tk 765.04 crore in five districts under Rangpur Agriculture Region have been damaged, sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.
A total of over 6.07 lakh farmers have been affected severely by the floods to incur huge crop losses under Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts along the Brahmaputra basin under the region.
The totally damaged crops include Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) worth Tk709.75 crore on 79,787 hectares of land, Aman seedbeds worth Tk1.
In Moulvibazar
Flash flood caused by onrush of water from Tripura, India has led to the swelling of the Juri River and its branches, inundating about 15 villages in Juri upazila, reports our correspondent.
About 10,000 people in those villages have been marooned by the floodwater while the water level continued to rise.
In Sunamganj
Our correspondent said the Surma River was flowing 58 cm above the danger level while about 135mm and 275mm rainfall were recorded at Sunamganj and Jadukata points respectively.
About 10,000 hectares of paddy fields have already been inundated.
Flood situation also deteriorated affecting over thousands of people in many areas of Kurigram and Khulna.
