RU observes 'Repression Day'

Authorities of Rajshahi University Monday observed the 'Students-Teachers Repression Day' condemning attack on students of the university by some army personnel on August 20, 2007 during the then army-backed caretaker government.

The day’s programme featured procession and discussions on the campus.

A procession led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan was brought out on the campus in the morning.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the senate building. RU Vice- Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin presided over the programme.

Among teachers, Prof Malay Bhowmick, Prof Dulal Chandra Bishwas, Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar and Prof Saidur Rahman Khan spoke on the occasion.

At the meeting, speakers demanded exemplary punishment of those people who were involved in the attack on students and employees.

They also urged the government to immediately withdraw cases filed against students of the university.

On August 20, 2007, army personnel beat up three students of Dhaka University over an altercation, sparking protests across the country's universities.
