People living in the northern parts of country are not only suffering from the ongoing flood, but also scarcity of relief materials.
With the rise of water level in the Teesta, Dhorola and Brahmaputra and Jamuna Rivers, flood situations have worsened in Kurigram, Gainbandha, Nilphamari and Rangpur districts.
In Kurigram, thousands of people of 53 unions have taken shelter in cyclone centres and on embankments, but the flood victims are not happy with relief. Many people are facing acute crisis of pure drinking water and foods.
Atia Khatun, a resident of Farazipara area, Kurigram Sadar upazila, said: “As flood water has intruded into my house, I have taken shelter on road with children and cattle. But in the last three days, nobody has come to help us. I am almost starving with my family.”
Manik Mia, a resident of Morarchar area under Chilmari upazila, said: “We need dried foods to survive in the situation.”
Sufia Begum, a resident of Pachgachi village, said she had to go on nearby bazar wading through waist deep water to buy food as she was yet to get any relief.
Chairman of Pachgachi union parishad Amir Hossain said 80% houses of his union were submerged by flood water. He did not get any kind of assistance from any government and non-government agency.
However, Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram had allocated 80 tonnes of rice for flood victim which would be sent to them soon.
In Gaibandha, two hundreds families have rendered homeless as erosion has turned serious in the locality.
A total of 50,000 people at 31 unions in the district have left marooned by flood water.
Tayejuddin, a resident of Lalchamar area under Sundor upazila, said he along with his family members were facing scarcity of foods and pure drinking water. “Safe sanitation is a now critial problem for us,” he said.
Ataur Rahman Sarkar Ata, chairman of Ghuridoh union parishad, said he was yet to get any relief from the government.
He said: “I have contacted with district administration to provide relief in the locality.”
Abdul Hai Milton, upazila nirbahi officer, said a total of 12 flood shelter centres had been opened in the upazila to help flood affected people.
Md Abdul Awal, Saghata upazila nirbahi office, said they were making list to help flood affected people.
