Ex-Jubo League leader killed in Gazipur 'gunfight'

A former Jubo League leader has been killed in a "gunfight" with Detective Branch (DB) of police in South Salna area in Gazipur.

Deceased Saidul Islam, 35, was the former president of Jubo League's ward no 97 in Dhaka's Badda area. He was the son of late Joimot Ali of South Badda.

Gazipur DB police OC Amir Hossain said: “Saidul was arrested in a drive on Thursday night. DB police went to recover arms taking him along with the law enforcers from Salna area around 11:45pm.

“Saidul's associates opened fire on the DB officials when they reached the area.”

In retaliation, DB police fired back that triggered a “gunfight" which left Saidul bullet wounded.

Later, Saidul's associates fled the scene. He was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, two DB officials –Yasin, 30, and Ujjal, 31, – were injured in the incident. They have been admitted to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.

The OC said he was an accused in two cases filed with Gazipur police station.

On the other hand, Badda OC MA Jajil said: “Saidul was an enlisted criminal and an accused in five cases, including murders, filed with the police station.”
