SC upholds HC order on Brazilian wheat

The Supreme Court has upheld a High Court verdict that ordered the government to take back the wheat imported from Brazil if anyone wants to return it and that the government should not force the consumers to buy or consume the wheat.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after rejecting a plea filed by the government challenging the High Court verdict.

According to media reports, around 200,000 tonnes of the wheat imported from Brazil and supplied by Singapore-based contractor Olam International were substandard.

On June 30, the High Court asked the authorities concerned to clarify whether the wheat, imported for Tk4 billion, was suitable for human consumption. On July 8, it ruled that the government should take back the wheat if any consumer wants to return it.
