The government has suspended BNP-backed Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan as he is charged with criminal offences.
The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry issued a circular in this regard yesterday, reports UNB.
One of BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s advisers, Mannan is the third BNP-backed city mayor to face suspension.
Earlier, Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul and Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury were suspended on May 7 and January 7 since they were named in charge sheets in several criminal cases.
The Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Gazipur accepted a charge sheet against Mannan in a criminal case filed with Joydebpur police. He has been suspended as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009, said the circular signed by Assistant Secretary AKM Anisuzzaman.
Mannan faces six cases filed with Joydebpur, Kaliakoir and Sreepur police stations on various charges, mainly arson and vandalism during the BNP-Jamaat alliance’s anti-government movement last year. He was arrested on February 11.
He was elected mayor of Gazipur City Corporation in its maiden election held in July 2013.
