Kushtia Detective Branch (DB) of police personnel have claimed an accused in local Jubo League activist Sabuj murder case to have been killed in a gunfight with them at Jagati BATB Forestry Complex in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased, Jakir Hossain, 30, son of Abdur Razzak, from of Kalbaria village in Mirpur upazila of the district, is also accused in another case launched on charge of killing of local Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) leader Imsail Hossain Panjer, reports UNB.
On contacted, Kushtia DB Inspector Sabbirul Islam said a team of DB police raided a house in in the area around 1:30am while a gang of criminals including Jakir was in a secret meeting.
Realising the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members started firing to shun possible arrest compelling police to fire back that triggered a gun battle.
Jakir was caught in the line of fire and got badly injured. However, his accomplices managed to flee the scene, the Inspector continued.
Later, he was declared dead on arrival at Kushtia General Hospital. The body was kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police recovered one shutter gun, two sharp weapons and two bullet shells from the spot.
Earlier, Jubo League activist Sabuj, 23, son of Mobarak of Jhalupara of the town, was killed and five others suffered bullet injuries during a clash between two factions of Awami League over joining the August 15 National Mourning Day Rally at Milpara in the district town. In the incident, a case was booked, in which Jakir was one of the accused.
Imsail Hossain Panjer, 56, former vice-president of Mirpur upazila unit of Jasad, was shot dead in a gun attack by miscreants in the upazila on April 14, 2014.
