CNG owners call dawn to dusk strike in Ctg

The CNG-run three-wheeler owners, drivers and workers have announced a dawn-to-dusk strike in Chittagong for August 13 protesting the decision to ban all three-wheelers in highways throughout the country.

Chittagong Divisional CNG-run Auto-rickshaw and Auto-tempo Shramik Union’s Chief Advisor Waziullah, also the advisor of four organisations of auto-rickshaw and auto-tempo owners and labourers in Chittagong district, confirmed to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.

The strike would be enforced in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, Luxmipur, Noakhali and Feni districts, he said.

He also informed that they would stage human chains and protest programmes on Dhaka-Chittagong, Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong-Rangamati-Khagrachhari Highways on August 4.

“We will also stage a protest rally at Chittagong Central Shahid Minar and submit memorandum to Roads and Bridge Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong district on August 9.

The organaisations will hold a grand rally at the port city’s Laldighi ground on August 13 after overseeing the strike,” he also said.

The transport leader further said the decisions were taken after a meeting amongst the organisations of three wheelers in Chittagong after staging demonstrations on the three highways in Chittagong district’s jurisdiction on Saturday.

The government issued a ban on the movement of three-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and non-motorised vehicles on highways across the country.

The ban will effect from August 1.

The ban came in the wake of deaths of over 240 peoples in a series of road accidents before and after the Eid-ul-Fitr across the country.
