Some 70 villages in six upazilas of Feni have been inundated in heavy rains and onrush of hill water over the past few days, leaving more than 0.3 million people marooned.
Fifteen of the villages are in Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas while 21 are in Feni Sadar upazila.
The villages were submerged after water in two rivers – Muhuri and Kuhua – flew at the danger level, leaving the river dams partially damaged. Apart from acute waterlogging, floods led to losses of crores of taka.
Several villages in the district remain without power as electricity lines were damaged. Families in the flood-affected areas are struggling with cooking food.
Road communications with the district town were heavily disrupted as some roads had been waterlogged while most were submerged.
In Daganbhuiyan upazila, students are bearing the brunt of floods as most of the school playgrounds remain waterlogged. Those institutions thus remain unofficially closed.
Houses and roads in 13 villages in Songazi upazila, located near the bank of the Feni River, and five in Chhagalnaiya have gone under water.
In four wards of Feni municipal area, drainage problems have aggravated waterlogging.
Feni 2 lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari has distributed relief goods among 3,000 flood-hit families in Sharshadi and Panchgachhiya unions under Feni Sadar upazila.
He said adequate relief materials were available to be doled out among flood victims.
