The World Tiger Day is being celebrated across the country today, aiming to build awareness across the globe to save the remaining population of the majestic big cat from extinction.
The global population of tiger, which is also popularly known as Bengal Tiger, the national animal of Bangladesh, has declined to 3,200 from one lakh in just 100 years since 1900.
The outlook has become bleaker for the population of tiger in the Bangladesh part of the Sundarbans, a world heritage site and the world’s largest abode of tiger, as the population here is declining alarmingly, according to experts and officials.
The Forest Department and different non-government organisatins have chalked out elaborate programmes in the capital as well as Satkhira, Bagerhat and Khulna districts to raise awareness among people for tiger conservation.
