Inclement weather hampers transportation across country

People across the country get stuck in several places as road communication has remained suspended due to inclement weather.

Road communication in Rangamati, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar remained suspended yesterday for the third consecutive day as many roads have been inundated by rainwater and landslides at many places.

Local sources said Lama, Ali Kdam, Naikhangchhari, Thanchi upazila’s low-lying areas had been submerged causing suffering for local residents.

Moreover, tourists who are visiting the hilly district get stuck as they cannot move.

As the Sangu and Matamuhuri Rivers are flowing over danger level,  thousands of people have been left marooned and a vast tract of crop lands, houses and educational institutions have been submerged.

Bandarban Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shafiqul Islam said they had already distributed relief materials among flood affected people.

Yesterday, hundreds of traffic got stuck in Boroduara area as a road was inundated by rainwater. 

Moreover, a bridge on Pulpara area has been submerged disrupting communication between Bandarban and Rangamati.

Meanwhile, launch and speed-boat services on Shimuliya-Kawrakandi route remain suspended for the second day for bad weather.

Shimuliya River Port’s traffic inspector Tofazzal Hossain said the authorities on Sunday noon decided to stop the plying of launch, speed boat, sea-boat, trawler and small boats through the route to avoid accident as the weather turned rough and there was strong current in the river.

He said services would resume once the situation becomes normal.

Abdul Halim, manager of BIWTC, said the passengers are crossing the route through ferry as the ferry services remained normal.

Apart from this, ferry service of Bhola-Laxmipur route came to a halt as a road was devoured near Elisha Ferry Ghat area by the Meghna River in Sadar upazila in the morning.

Locals said all types of the vehicular movement on the road came to a halt as it was totally damaged due to the erosion caused by the strong waves of the Meghna River.

Though the river erosion has been taking its toll on the road since Sunday morning, the officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) could not take any step to stop it because of rough weather.

Abdul Hekim, executive engineer of Bhola BWDB, said, at least 300-metre road has been damaged following the rough weather and they could not take any measures for the weather condition.

Besides, ferry services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route in the Padma River was disrupted on Thursday morning due to inclement weather.

Official of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation in Daulatdia Sazzadur Rahman said the authorities suspended ferry services on the route from 6am as marking lights become blurred due to heavy fog.

Huge numbers of vehicles are waiting on both sides of the ferries, causing immense suffering to hundreds of passengers.
