Nine people, including three women, were killed and 16 others injured in two separate road accidents in Gopalganj and Manikganj yesterday.
In the past week, at least 128 people died in road and rail accidents in different districts.
The accident in Gopalganj’s Kashiani upazila, which involved a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus, left seven people killed and eight injured.
Five of the seven are microbus driver Hanif, 28, Babu Sheikh, 45, son of Ful Mia of Narail, Tania, 30, daughter of Asaduzzaman Sheikh of Narail, Mehedi Begum, wife of Miraz Mia of Narail, and Mizanur Rahman, 50, of Narail. The other two could not be identified.
The accident took place when a Gopalganj-bound bus of Ashik Sagor Paribahan rammed into the microbus, which was travelling to Mawa from Kalna, at Bhatiapara intersection on Dhaka-Khulna highway around 11am.
Babu Sheikh died on the scene while six others succumbed to injuries after they were taken to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex.
Of the eight injured, six were admitted to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex and the two others to Gopalganj General Hospital.
Rosy and Saddam were in a critical condition, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kashiani police station.
On the other hand, the accident in Manikganj killed Sujon Mia, 30, a resident of Sanail village and Meher Ali, 50, of Kashemnagar village, reports UNB.
Syeduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Singair police station, said the accident took place in Baira area of Singair when a bus hit a Manikganj-bound human haulier around 10 am.
