Residents of the port city of Chittagong have been enduring immense sufferings as non-stop torrential rain that began on Thursday night inundated lower parts of the city.
Though it was Friday, public holiday, the commuters had to brave knee-deep water that also disrupted traffic movements in various areas.
Most parts of the city including Halishahar, Beparipara, Sholoshahar, Muradpur, Aturar Dipo, Bibirhat, Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar, Sulokbahar, Panchlaish, Saraipara, Pahartali, Sagarika and the lower parts of Patenga coastal zone were under water because of the rain.
The situation got worst when the rainy water got mixed up with sewage and garbage piled up by the Chittagong City Corporation on busy roads in some areas.
Though loading and unloading of goods at Chittagong port continued like others days, other port activities faced interruptions due to rain.
As there is possibility of landslide, district administration had been asking the hill-side dwellers to move to safe spaces like nearby school buildings and cyclone centres to avert possible causality.
Earlier, six persons including three children were killed in a landslide and a wall collapse caused by heavy downpour in Chittagong city’s Lalkhan Bazar and Baizid areas a day after the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Md Shahinul Islam, assistant meteorologist of Chittagong Met Office in Patenga told the Dhaka Tribune that his office had recorded around 224 millimetres of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 3pm yesterday.
He further added that the rainfall or thunder showers accompanied by gusty wind, which is common during monsoon, would continue for the next two or three days.
