12 more meet their end on roads

At least 12 people including a policeman were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Gazipur and Madaripur yesterday – just a day after the country had witnessed at least 26 people killed in accidents.

In another incident, a 25-year-old woman was killed in Kuril around 4am yesterday morning.

Victim Nasrin Akhter Nasima, daughter of Akhter Hossain of Barisal, was a garment worker and had just returned from Khulna with her brother Nasir Hossain,14.

Khilkhet police’s SI Shafiqul Islam said Nasrin reached Sadarghat by launch from Barisal early in the morning. They boarded a local bus named Suprobhat to go home at Tongi. When the bus reached Kuril the driver lost control and hit the central reservation. Three people including Nasrin went crashing out the window and Nasrin died on the spot.

Some five-six people were also injured in the incident.

Nasrin was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared her dead. Her brother Nasir and other relatives later received her body.

A police constable named Sohel Rana, 36, son of Khalilur Rahman from Ishwardi, was killed at the Karwan Bsazar intersection yesterday.

Sohel was a constable of the security cell of the Police Headquarters, said Tejgaon police station Officer-in-Charge Md Mazharul Islam.

He said the policeman received fatal injuries as a Mirpur-bound bus rammed into his motorbike from behind near the Northern University campus at Karwan Bazar around 2pm.

He was rushed to the DMCH by a Navy vehicle around 3pm where doctors declared him dead.

His body was sent to the morgue, said the OC, adding that police seized the bus and held its driver and helper from Shewrapara of the city.

A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a bus while trying to cross the road in Shewrapara of the capital around 8am yesterday.

The victim Saiful Islam Selim, 45, died on the spot as a Gulistan-bound bus hit him, said Kafrul police Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Abul Hossain. Selim worked for a private company and was a resident of Shewrapara.

In the capital’s Jatrabari, one Mujibur Rahman, 53, died at the intersection under the flyover yesterday around 11:20am. He was on a motorcycle and was hit by a truck.

A pedestrian named Faruk took him to the DMCH around 12:10pm where doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, in Gazipur, four people were killed and 13 others injured when a covered van collided head-on with a human haulier at Naujor in Gazipur yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Saidur Rahman, 20, son of Hazrat Ali, a resident of Sherpur; Moni Akter of Naujor area; and Sohel Mia, an employee of Keya Cosmetics. Identity of the fourth victim could not be known immediately, reports our correspondent in the district.

Bahar Alam, sergeant of Naujor police outpost, said a Konabari-bound human haulier from Chandana hit the covered van coming from the opposite direction around 7:30am, leaving three people dead on the spot and 14 others injured. One of the victims died on the way to hospital. The injured were taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital.

Road communication on the highway remained halted for half an hour.

None was arrested as the covered van driver escaped.

In Madaripur, four people were killed and eight others injured in a collision between a bus and a microbus in Melkai area of Tarash upazila, reports our correspondent.

The deceased could not be identified immediately but all of them were passengers of the microbus.

Emdadul Haque, OC of Kalkini police station, said the Barisal-bound bus collided with the Dhaka-bound microbus on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway around 1pm, leaving four people dead on the spot and eight others injured.

The injured were admitted to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex.

A total of 128 people were reportedly killed in road and rail accidents in the country in the past week.
