Incessant rain interrupts eid celebration

Torrential rain since early Saturday have interrupted the eid celebration by creating waterlogging in different parts of the country including the capital city Dhaka.

The heavy monsoon showers brought the entire country to a standstill as people cannot come out of their houses due to the indiscriminate rain.

According to the Meteorological Department, the capital experienced 90 millimetres of rainfall till 6am Sunday while 9mm rainfall was recorded till 12 noon.

Quoting Met office, BSS reported that 45mm rainfall was recorded at Hatiya in Noakhali, 38mm in Comilla, 32mm in Feni, 37mm in Sandwip, 32mm in Khepupara, 45mm in Ishwardi and 30mm in Sitakunda till 12 noon since 6am Sunday.

The maximum rainfall was recorded 109mm in Sitakunda in the last 24 hours till 6 this morning.

The axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal and thence northeastwards to Assam across central part of Bangladesh, an official release said.

One of its associated troughs extends to Northwest Bay. Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over North Bay.

Light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong & Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

Many parts of the city remain submerged with water going into homes and shops in the low lying areas.

Temporary waterlogging was seen at Badda, Rampura, Bangshal, Chawkbazar, Sutrapur, Nababpur, Motijheel, Shantinagar, Malibagh, Kakrail, Sabujbagh, Khilgaon, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Shyampur, Senpara Parbata, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Farmgate, Uttara, Dakhinkhan, Dhanmondi, Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Gulshan, Banani, Mirpur and several other areas.

Meteorological Department, however, said the intensity of rainfall in the capital was likely to cease from Tuesday.
