Ctg highways under IP camera surveillance

Chittagong district police administration has taken an initiative to bring the highways under the surveillance of internet protocol (IP) digital cameras with a view to checking criminal activities and traffic congestions.

A total of 32 IP cameras have been installed at 16 points of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, Chittagong-Hathazari-Fatickchari Road and Keranirhat, Amirabad and Adhunagar points under Satkania upazila of Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway, police sources said.

The IP cameras are directly monitored by the high police officials on their mobile phone screens while field-level police take immediate actions after being directed about traffic congestions or other criminal offences during the Eid-rush of homebound people on the roads, sources added.

Sources also said earlier police had to remain standby at all the points of the highway, however, now they would just rush to the spot when traffic congestion or any other incident took place. Superintendent of Police AKM Hafiz Akhtar said: “High police officials have directly been controlling traffic seeing the footage on their mobile phone, which have already proved fruitful.”  “A part from easing traffic congestion, it will also reduce criminal offences like robbery, mugging or other subversive activities,” the SP said.
