A day after the tragic deaths that occurred centring Zakat distribution in Mymensingh, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) made it mandatory to seek police permission before any individual or organisation wants to organise mass Zakat distribution programme.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah made the remark while talking to reporters after distributing clothes among the poor at Paltan Community Centre in the capital yesterday.
“It is mandatory to inform the local police station at least a day before holding any big Zakat distribution programme as there are risks of untoward incidents,” he said adding that stern measures would be taken against those who would not follow the instruction.
Citing the example of Mymensingh where 27 people died in stampede, the DMP chief said such incidents could be avoided if Zakat donors would take police help. “It is the responsibility of the organiser to ensure security and discipline. We are always ready to help,” he said.
Answering to a query about illegal vehicle parking, the DMP commissioner said they were monitoring and taking steps against illegal parking on roads and in front of markets.
“Many residences and markets have been built in the city without any parking facility. We will make sure that no buildings without designated parking area is approved in future,” said Asaduzzaman.
With the Eid-ul-Fitr around the corner, the DMP boss distributed clothes among the underprivileged people in Motijheel and Paltan areas.
