A petition has been filed with the War Crimes Tribunal, seeking trial of Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury for contempt of court over his comments on its judges.
After the tribunal found Zafrullah, a Magsaysay award-winner, guilty of contempt of court and imprisoned him in the dock on June 10, the freedom fighter criticised the ICT judges.
Freedom fighter Monoranjan Ghoshal, Organiser of Gonojagoron Moncho faction Kamal Pasha Chowdhury, activist FM Shahin, Ali Asgar and Nazrul Islam on Monday filed the petition with the office of International Crimes Tribunal’s registrar.
Later, the petition has been forwarded to tribunal 2 for further proceedings, said tribunal Registrar Shahidul Alam.
“The tribunal 2 has fixed Tuesday for hearing the plea.”
A war crimes tribunal found Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury guilty of contempt of court and imprisoned him in the dock for his statement expressing concern over the conviction of Bangladesh-based UK journalist David Bergman.
The International Crimes Tribunal 2 led by Justice Obaidul Hassan ordered to hold him in the dock under police vigilance for one hour and also fined Tk5,000. He will have to serve a month in prison in default.
On June 16, the Supreme Court stayed until July 5 the tribunal’s verdict that fined Zafrullah Tk5,000, responding to a plea.
However on June 18, the tribunal issued arrest warrant against the freedom fighter “for his failure in paying the money.”
Later on June 21, the tribunal recalled it after Zafrullah submitted a Supreme Court stay order with his petition.
