Process on to build commercial structures on unused railway land

Around 12,960 acres of land owned by Bangladesh Railway have remained unused across the country and grabbers have built illegal structures at some places, Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque told parliament yesterday.

“Illegal occupants are now being gradually evicted,” the minister said in reply to a lawmaker’s query.

A process is on to build a five-star hotel, commercial buildings, motels, medical colleges, hospitals and multi-storied shopping malls on the unused land under the public private partnership (PPP), the minister said.

The government has already appointed a transaction adviser under the Prime Minister’s Office for building the five-star hotel at Zakir Hossain Road in Chittagong, he said.

Mazibul also said that an agreement was signed on May 19 to appoint a transaction adviser for the development of a shopping complex-cum-guest house under PPP on a Bangladesh Railway land near the railway stations in Chittagong, Khulna and Comilla.
