Missing BAF pilot’s fate still uncertain

An intensive search operation is going on braving the rough weather in the Bay of Bengal near Chittagong’s Patenga beach to find Flight Lieutenant Tahmid Rumman, who crashed into the sea with his a F-7MB 416 fighter jet on Monday morning.

Tahmid remains missing as of 8:30pm yesterday, when this report was filed.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Lt Commander Durul Huda, public relations officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) and commanding officer of Coast Guard Ship Tawfiq, said the coast guard, Bangladesh Navy, BAF, the maritime authority and Chittagong Port Authority have been jointly searching for Tahmid.

“But we have yet to find him,” he said, adding that rough weather in the sea was hampering the rescue operation.

The aircraft crashed into the sea near Chittagong Port’s Outer Anchorage area – around six nautical miles off Patenga beach – on Monday around 11:30am soon after losing contact with the control room of Chittagong airport.

Some broken parts of the aircraft’s wings were found on Monday, the rest of the aircraft is yet to be found.

Tahmid’s family members were staying at the BAF Zahurul Haq Base officers’ residence when this report was filed.
