BAF pilot Tahmid still missing in Bay

A pilot of a Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) fighter jet is still missing after the aircraft crashed into the Bay of Bengal in Chittagong.

Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) Public Relations Officer Lt Commander Durul Huda, also the commanding officer of CGS Tawfiq told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.

The coast guard, navy, air force, maritime authority and Chittagong Port Authority have been jointly conducting search missing Flight Lieutenant Rumman Tahmid Chowdhury immediate after the incident took place on Monday, said the official.

“But, the rescuers did not find yet missing pilot Tahmid till filing of this report at 12:55pm.”

However, the high tide caused by rough weather in the sea is hampering the rescue operation, he said.

The aircraft crashed into the sea near Chittagong Port’s Outer Anchorage area – around six nautical miles off Patenga beach – around 11:30am soon after losing contact with the control room of Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.

Some broken parts of the aircraft’s wings were found on Monday.

Flight Lieutenant Tahmid, from Chittagong’s Anwara upazila, is the eldest son of his parents, among three brothers and one sister. His family currently lives in Dhaka’s Shantibagh area.

Tahmid joined Bangladesh Air Force five years ago, his younger brother Adnan Towfiq told the Dhaka Tribune.
