The government of Bangladesh is set to sign a deal with a Chinese state-owned company for the construction of the much talked about two-lane tunnel underneath the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong.
The commercial agreement between Bangladesh Bridge authority and China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) will be signed at a ceremony in Beijing, China, around 3pm (local time) Tuesday.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng are scheduled to be present at the deal signing ceremony, an official of Road Transport and Bridges Ministry told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Bridges Division Secretary Anwarul Islam, and Bridge Authority Chief Engineer Kabir Ahmad have already reached China for this purpose.
The works to construct the 4.21km tunnel, which is a first-of-its-kind in Bangladesh, is expected to start by the end of 2015 and conclude in 2019.
