The flood situation has improved in Cox’s Bazar as the water started receding after the shower declined on Saturday after six days of non-stop downpour. But about 500,000 people are still marooned.
People are still suffering especially for pure drinking water. Local people said relief in most of areas of the district are yet to reach.
Water borne diseases such as dysentery, diarrhoea and allergy have broken out with the recession of flood water. Government and non-government organisations are distributing relief among flood-affected people, but it is hardly enough for them.
About 4,000 betel leaf fields located in Ramu, Moheskhali, Ukhia, Chokoria, Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila and Teknaf were inundated by flood water.
The local administration has closed all educational institutions at Ramu upazila.
Meanwhile, Acting Deputy Commissioner Dr Anupam Saha along with lawmaker Saimum Sarwar Komol, former lawmaker Lutfar Rahman Kajol visited several flood-affected areas and distributed relief among local people.
According to local sources, communication on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road remained suspended as many parts of the road were submerged in rainwater.
Besides, the DC handed over cheques among the family members of people who died in landslide and flood in the district.
At least 11 people, including a mother and a daughter, were killed in flash flood and landslide triggered by uninterrupted heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.
Dr Anupam Saha told the Dhaka Tribune that they were trying hard to reach relief materials to the people living in remote areas.
Water levels in 37 river stations monitored by (FFWC) have marked rises and 41 stations recorded falls.
According to a bulletin issued by FFWC, among the 84 monitored water level stations, four river stations have been registered steady while two stations are above danger mark.
The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Surma Kushiyara river systems are in falling trend which may likely to continue in next 48 hours.
The Ganges-Padma river system is in rising trend which may continue for next 24 hours.
A total of 91 mm rainfall were recorded at Pachpukuria, 81.5 mm at
Jessore, 63 mm at Cox’s Bazar, 62.5 mm at Teknaf, 43 mm at Pabna, 39 mm at Lama, 38 mm at Rangamati and 35.5 mm at Dhaka.
