Some 42 families in Hiran Uttarpara village in Kotalipara upazila have been living without electricity for about three months as an influential former UP member there did not allow to set up the electricity poles on his land to establish the connection.
Earlier, the electricity connection to the families remained continued for about 18 years.
Though the sufferers have already raised the matter to the local Palli Bidyut authorities against former UP member Modasser Khan, their move finally failed to see any light.
It was learnt that electric wires were stretched over the house of Modasser to the families about 18 years ago although he oppossed the decision that time.
About three months ago, the wires got disconnected by strom and fell on his tinshed house leaving, however, none injured. Since then Modasser was adamant to reinstate the connection.
At one stage, the vitims took a move to change the course of the electric poles while the new setup also needs Modasser’s land and the step was again oppossed by the former UP member.
However, the victims later reqested Modasser to retreat from his strict position and it finally ended in vain.
When contacted, Modasser Khan said: “I want to have the electricity connection to the families. Another accident, even fatal, may took place again on the earlier point being disconnected the wires and that is why I have oppossed the connection.”
Former UP chairman Golam Kibria Daria termed the situation inhumane, telling his several initiatives to slove the crisis failed because of not getting due response from Modasser.
Kotalipara Palli Bidyut Samity AGM Md Jahurul Karim said: “We are also in trouble with the long-pending matter. Only a man has no right to push so many people into such sort of suffering. We are ready to give the connection anew if the village heads come with a solution in this regard.”
