New army chief calls on president, PM

Newly-appointed Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq has made a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Bangabhaban and at the latter's Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office respectively.

During the meeting with president, Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq expressed his gratitude to the government for appointing him as the Chief of Army Staff, president's press secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.

General Shafiul Huq sought president's cooperation for the development and modernisation of the Bangladesh Army.

The president hoped that the Bangladesh Army would move forward further under the leadership of the new army chief.

During the call on, the Army Chief sought cooperation of the prime minister in discharging his responsibility, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters.

Wishing the Army Chief's success, the prime minister assured him of extending all kinds of cooperation in performing his duty.

General Belal took over the charge of the new Army Chief from former Army Chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan on Thursday who went on retirement on June 25.
