An 8km railway track from Ibrahimabad station to Charbhabla area of Kalihati in Tangail is at risk of being washed out by incessant rains.
A portion of the soil under the track was damaged last year but has not yet been permanently fixed. It was only temporarily repaired.
The track runs parallel with Bangabandhu bridge approach road from Ibrahimabad station.
The area between the road and the track became waterlogged because of poor drainage system.
In June 21 last year, a five feet hole appeared after heavy rains washed out soil under the track in Analiabari area of Kalihati, suspending rail communications between Dhaka and the northern part of the country for five hours.
Soon after the incident, the railway department filled the hole with sandbags but no further repair was carried out.
Shawkat Jamil, divisional transportation officer of Bangladesh Railway, said the hole was not permanently fixed as trains moved without any trouble.
Monirul Islam, divisional engineer of Bangladesh Railway (west), told the Dhaka Tribune the track was under regular monitoring.
“We need to construct a drain in the middle of the track to prevent it from being washed out,” he said but gave no further information on when such a measure would be taken.
