An officer of Industrial Police in Chittagong and one of his aides have been detained for allegedly kidnapping an insurance company official and realising ransom.
Mahbubur Rahman, a sub-inspector of the Chittagong Industrial Police, and his aide Md Faridul, 28, were detained by Kotwali police of the port city on Thursday. The SI was later handed over to Industrial Police along with a written complaint about the alleged crime that he had committed, but Kotwali police kept Fridul in their custody.
Kotwali police station OC Jasim Uddin said Mahbubur had been detained at an ATM booth in the morning.
Police sources said the SI and his cohort had forcibly picked the insurance official Ziaul Karim, 30, up to a CNG-run auto rickshaw from Tigerpass area in the city at around 4:00am while he was going to Halishahar residential area from Tigerpass area.
Sources said that the duo had allegedly abducted insurance company official Zia and took him to a residential hotel named Martin in the port city's Kadamtali railway station area.
Mahbubur introduced himself a Detective Branch (DB) official to Zia and threatened to arrest him unless he paid Tk50,000 as ransom. Zia agreed and went to an ATM booth of the Dutch Bangla Bank Limited located in the city's Tinpoler Matha area.
In the meantime, Zia had somehow managed to inform Kotwali police, based on which law enforcers acted.
OC Jasim said that Zia had filed written complaint against Mahbubur at the Kotwali police station; this complaint was later given to Industrial Police when the suspect was being handed over.
OC Arifur Rahman Arif of Industrial Police’s Detective Branch told the Dhaka Tribune that SI Mahbubur was mentally unstable when Kotwali police handed him over.
“Action will be taken against the SI after investigation,” Arif said.
