Dilapidated school building makes students’ life risky

Students of Gonoman Purura Government Primary School in Hossainpur upazila, Kishoreganj have been attending classes under the open sky as their school building has turned too risky for use.

The school building has been declared abandoned by the Local Government Engineering Department one year back because of its rundown state.

But the school authorities in this period could not be able to manage alternative arrangement for students so that they can take classes smoothly.

Habiba Akter, a class five student, said they remained in panic while attending classes on the school ground under open sky in the rainy season.

“Sometimes we get drenched while attending classes in the rainy season,” she said.

“If the authorities concerned do not take immediate steps to reconstruct the school building, we will have to shift our kids elsewhere,” said Abdus Sattar, a guardian of the school and father of Poresh of class five student.

“In view of the safety of students and teachers, we have arranged lessons for students under the open sky amid risk. I have informed the chairman of school managing committee and the upazila education officer about the matter,” said MA Jalil, assistant teacher of the school.

Upazila Education Officer Md Asaduzzaman said: “Engineers of local LGED office last year announced the building of the school abandoned and a priority proposal letter had been sent to the higher authorities to take measure to reconstruct the school building. We hope the building construction work will start soon.”

The school was established in 1983. The school has four teachers for 230 students.
