The High Court (HC) yesterday cleared way for holding a senate meeting of Chittagong University (CU) to form a panel in order to elect a vice-chancellor.
Rejecting a writ petition that challenged the legality of the university’s senate meeting, the HC said there was no legal impediment to holding the meeting, confirmed the university’s lawyer Kamal-Ul Alam.
The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Md Izarul Haque Akand passed the order.
Three teachers of CU filed the writ petition on May 14 stating that the university authorities were going to form a VC panel without forming a full senate first.
The meeting was scheduled for May 23.
Following the petition, the court on May 21 issued a rule upon the university authorities to explain why the constitution of the existing senate of CU should not be declared illegal and stayed the process of holding the meeting.
