DU student torture: Ex-Khilgaon OC surrenders

Former officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Helal Uddin has surrendered before a Dhaka court in a case filed against him for torturing former Dhaka University student Andul Kader.

Then, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Kabir Raj sent him to jail on Sunday afternoon.

The court also rejected a bail petition filed by Helal's lawyer.

Helal surrendered before the court through his lawyer on the condition of filing an appeal against the judgement of the court that sentenced him to three years' imprisonment.

On May 18, the same court sentenced Helal to three years’ simple imprisonment for torturing Abdul Kadar with a machete in custody and falsely implicating him in three cases in 2011.

At the police station, Helal had hit Kadar’s leg with a machete to force a confession about his involvement in various crimes he had never committed.

Helal and then SI Alam Badshah and ASI Shahidur Rahman of Khilgaon police were suspended in 2012.

Kadar was freed on bail on August 3, 2011, after 18 days of his detention. Later, the court acquitted him from the false cases.

Then a master’s student at Dhaka University’s biochemistry and molecular biology, Kadar filed the case on January 23, 2012 with Khilgaon police against Helal in line with a court order. The charge sheet was submitted on March 26.

Kadar is now serving as a teacher at a government college.
