The sophomore curse doesn’t only occur in the music industry. Many sequels of hit films have fallen flat, and sometimes downright insulting. Tanu Weds Manu Returns has risen above, exceeds expectations and is worth the ticket price. The first film was entertaining and left the audience more than satisfied. The second installment retains the originality of the first film and presents us with an unconventional look at marriage. Not to mention taking effective jabs at elitism and patriarchy.
The film starts off with both leading characters Tanu (Kangana Ranaut) and Manu (Madhavan) wanting to cancel each other out from their lives. It’s a common occurrence after the honeymoon period is over for many couples. Tanu decides to leave her husband in London, and heads off to see her family back in India. Manu, however, finds himself a new love interest (also played by Ranaut) with a sporty crop hairdo, while his wife avoids any reconciliation.
The script has been very well written, and nothing less than a superb performance by the entire cast. Believe it or not, Tanu Weds Manu Returns has recieved incredible reviews from both critics and the general public. It’s something no other film this year has been able to accomplish.
