An Arabic teacher of Holy Crescent School at Mirpur has been sentenced to life term imprisonment for raping a five-year-old girl of the same school inside the compound last year.
Convict Minhaz Uddin, younger brother of the school’s Principal Mesbah Uddin, was also fined Tk2 lakh. In case of his failure to pay the fine, he will have to serve three more years in jail, the court said in the order yesterday.
Judge Tanjina Ismail of the Dhaka’s Fifth Special Tribunal for Prevention of Repression on Women and Children passed the order in presence of the rapist. The court also ordered the convict to give Tk1 lakh to the victim’s family as compensation.
According to the case, on the way home from school with her grandmother on March 11 last year, the victim was crying constantly but did not mention anything. Mother of the victim found blood on her trousers when she tried to change her clothes. She then said her teacher had hurt her.
She was first taken to Al Helal Hospital in Mirpur and later admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for excessive bleeding.
Police arrested Minhaz on March 12 after the girl identified him.
