Bangladeshi UN peacekeeper killed in Mali

A Bangladeshi United Nations peacekeeper has been shot dead by terrorists in Mali's capital Bamako.

The deceased is Sree Nilkanto Hajang.

Another Bangladeshi peacekeeper was wounded in the shooting, according to a press release issued by the ISPR on Tuesday morning.

The media release says a group of terrorists opened fire on a jeep of the Bangladesh transport contingent of the peacekeeping mission in Mali at around 7:30am Monday, leaving Nilkanto Hajang dead and Sirajul Islam wounded with bullets.

The injured, Sirajul Islam, is undergoing treatment at Level 2 Hospital in Bamako, it added.

More than 100 Bangladeshi peacekeepers so far have lost their lives in the UN missions. 

Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions is the largest in the world with over 10,000 peacekeepers now engaged in the missions. ​
