BNP Chairperson Khaleda has Zia appeared before a special court set up at Bakshibazar in the capital in connection with the graft cases of Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable Trust.
The BNP chief reached the court premises around 10:30am and left at 12:30pm Monday after the hearing.
The court fixed June 18 for next hearing in the graft cases.
Khaleda's counsel Khandakar Mahbub Hossain filed a petition seeking cancellation of the plaintiff's deposition in Zia Orphanage case. He also requested the court to take fresh deposition of the plaintiff.
However, the rejected the petition. Then Khaleda's counsel said they would file plea with the High Court.
Then, the court ordered them to submit the HC order regarding the matter on June 18.
Khaleda's lawyers also filed a time petition for cross examination of the petitioner saying that they could not take preparation as they were busy ahead of the upcoming SCBA polls.
Tight security measures were taken in and around the court centering Khaleda's appearance.
On May 5, Dhaka’s Third Special Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar fixed May 25 for the hearing in the graft cases and asked Khaleda to be present during the hearing.
On that day, Khaleda’s counsel Masud Ahmed Talukder assured the court that the BNP chief would appear before the court on the fixed date.
The trial of the corruption cases against Khaleda and eight other accused began on September 22 last year.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed one of the graft cases against Khaleda and five others for embezzling over Tk2.1 crore in the name of Zia Orphanage Trust that existed only on paper. The other case was also filed by the anti-graft body in 2011 for abusing power in setting up the Zia Charitable Trust.
