First-ever job fair for returnee migrants held

The country’s first-ever job fair for returnee migrants was held at the Institute of Diploma Engineers in the city yesterday.   

At least 300 migrant workers attended the fair, organised by Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF). BEF Vice President Sabrina Islam formally inaugurated the daylong fair.

BEF Secretary General Farooq Ahmed said, “Many of the migrant workers, both skilled and semi-skilled, returns home each year and looks for jobs here in Bangladesh.” 

“That is why, we’ve organised the fair with the help of International Labor Organization (ILO) for the returnee migrant workers who are trying to find a suitable job here,” said Farooq Ahmed.

Ahmed also said, “With an aim to help both the returnees and employers to come on a same platform, BEF has come up with the idea of organizing the job fair where the two parties can interact with each others directly.”

“We’re preparing a database of the returnees and in case of any vacancy, they would be called by the respective companies.”

BEF’s plans include replication of the job fair at the divisional headquarters throughout 2015-16 period.

At least 20 companies took part in the job fair where around 300 returnee migrants dropped their CVs, seeking jobs in various sector. Among others, Square group, Beximco group, Rangs group, Mir group, Envoy group, Babylon group, Gallery Apex, ACI and Mirpur Ceramics took part in the fair.    

Attending the fair, Al Amin, a returnee migrant worker who spent 2 years in Malaysia, said, “ I won’t go to any foreign country any further as I want to do something better in my own country. There are lots of scopes to explore here in Bangladesh.”
