At least three workers have sustained severe burn injuries after a fire broke out at a lighter vessel at Matubbarghat in Chittagong city’s Karnaphuli area early on Thursday.
The injured are Joynal Abedin, 25, Akhter Hossen, 26, and Al Amin, 26.
Chittagong Medical College Hospital police outpost Nayek Hamidur Rahaman said the injured were admitted to CMCH’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit.
Officer-in-Charge Md Rafiqul Islam of Karnaphuli police station told the Dhaka Tribune that a fire broke out in the engine room of the lighter vessel at around 3:30am Thursday at the Matubbarghat area while the three were working inside the room.
Quoting the other workers, the OC said the fire ignited after an explosion and engulfed the room, leaving the three workers burnt.
The vessel workers had doused the blaze before the fire brigade personnel reached the scene, added the OC.
